Holiday Book Drive
Holiday Book Drive
Overview
Wish Upon a Book's Holiday Book Drive project serves students at predominantly low-income elementary schools by providing tools for a teacher-developed lesson plan related to a book, and then a copy of that book for EVERY student to take home (plus books for the classroom libraries)!
Wish Upon a Book provides both the books + the lesson plan materials!
The Classrooms
Just like every year, teachers and students from all pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade classrooms at Maternity BVM Elementary School in Chicago, San Miguel Elementary School in Los Angeles, and MLK Jr School in Phoenix will participate in the 2024 Holiday Book Drive!
Special Note: This year, we’re also serving 4th + 5th grades at BVM in Chicago to pilot that age group! :)
How It Works
1. Teachers develop really special lesson plans around a specific book, and they send the information to the Wish Upon a Book team. The request includes: the lesson plan, the names of the student in the class, a mini wishlist for classroom library books, and a request for any materials needed to execute the lesson plans.
2. Wish Upon a Book collects books from generous donors (donate here!) and wraps the books for the holidays. We also collect donations for the classroom library books and lesson plan supplies.
3. The books are delivered to the school in mid-December.
4. Before the break, the teachers read the book to the class, perform the fun lesson plans (think pajama parties, math activities, and so many art project this year - all related to the book!), and then the kids can open their new wrapped books to read over + over at home!
